2008-2011 Theme Project
Persistent Poverty and Upward Mobility
TEAM MEMBER SEARCH

The Institute for the Social Sciences is in the process of evaluating proposals by faculty interested in beccoming additional members for the just-selected 2008-2011 theme project. The project, “Persistent Poverty and Upward Mobility,” is led by Chris Barrett, Applied Economics and Management. Thus far, the project team includes Cornell faculty from Policy Analysis and Management, Sociology, and Nutritional Sciences.

The goal of the 2008-2011 theme project is to propel Cornell to the forefront of research on poverty by bringing together a diverse group of scholars to conduct complimentary research projects, as well as to engage Cornell and broader communities. For further information, please read a description of the 2008-2011 theme project, the project proposal, and additional information about theme projects.

All team members will teach no more than two courses during the 2009-2010 academic year. Each team member will also receive a $6,000 discretionary budget in support of his or her research within the theme project.

Cornell tenure-track faculty who wished to join the Persistent Poverty and Upward Mobility theme project submitted a double-spaced 7-page proposal, and a current curriculum vitae, to socialsciences@cornell.edu by Monday, April 7, 2008. It was asked that the proposals: (1) describe proposed research on persistent poverty or the escape from poverty, (2) describe how the proposed research enhances the theme project, and (3) describe how the applicant complements the existing team. It was asked that applicants submit application materials electronically to socialsciences@cornell.edu. We prefer proposals in pdf format with the two parts of the application compiled into one document, but we also accept MSWord documents. No hard copies are needed.

For additional FAQs for prospective team members, please see http://www.socialsciences.cornell.edu/faq.html. Applicants were strongly encouraged to read this information before applying, and also to meet with Beta Mannix, ISS Director, before submitting a proposal. For appointments, please contact Anneliese Truame, 607-255-3304.
