Marriage and Family:
Complexities and Perspectives
April 7-8, 2006
423 ILR Conference Center, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
Overview
The changes in contemporary family life in the past 30 years have been revolutionary. Rates of divorce, cohabitation, and out-of-wedlock births have dramatically increased, and the family has evolved and changed in countless other ways as well. This conference includes multidisciplinary perspectives on marriage and family. The conference begins with a theoretical overview of marriage from
anthropological, biological, economic, feminist, historical, and sociological
perspectives. The subsequent sessions include empirical work on topics that play a central role in current debates about marriage and the family. These include the process of mate selection, why people marry, the consequences of different family structures, the design and impact of marriage education programs, and the impact of domestic violence on marriage. The conference concludes with a session consisting of several family scholars speculating on the future of marriage.
